SUMMARY:Deadline Paper Submission: 3rd International Workshop on the Sharin
 g Economy
STATUS:CONFIRMED
DESCRIPTION:For further information see: http://www.southampton.ac.uk/wsa/n
 ews/events/iwse/index.page\n\nEnabled by digital platform technologies\, t
he sharing economy allows households\, individuals\, businesses\, governme
nt and non-government organisations to engage in collaborative production\
, distribution and consumption of goods and services. It can potentially l
ead to an increase in employment\, economic efficiency\, sustainable use o
f resources\, broadened access to highly valuable assets\, and enhanced so
cial relationships. The sharing economy can also give rise to innovation d
riven business models appealing to a different group of customers\, normal
ly ignored by mainstream businesses\, and based on a novel supply chain an
d operations model which makes it possible to outsource to platform users
a significant portion of business functions. These inevitably challenge co
nventional business and policy thinking about the role and functions of cu
stomers\, employees and the organisation.\n\nTo no small degree\, the inte
rest in the sharing economy is fueled by ongoing international media stori
es about the expansion of new and highly successful sharing economy platfo
rms (such as Uber\, Airbnb\, Taskrabbit\, Blablacar\, etc.). The academic
debate is yet to fully catch up with this business media buzz. It has only
now started to critically investigate the popular claims about the sharing
economy. There is still very little systematic understanding of the antece
dents of the sharing economy\, its organizational forms and their novelty\
, the enabling and constraining factors of the sharing economy and its imp
acts.\nHence\, the purpose of this workshop is to engage with different st
rands of academic scholarship on the sharing economy originating across di
fferent disciplines (such as management and business studies\, economics\,
geography\, legal studies\, sociology\, political sciences and other disci
plines) to help to develop an integrated understanding of the sharing econ
omy phenomenon\, its drivers\, forms and implications for individuals\, bu
sinesses and society.\n\nThe Workshop will encourage conceptual\, methodol
ogical and empirical contributions that address\, but are not limited to\,
the following questions:\nIn what ways can conceptual frameworks and metho
dologies from different disciplines be integrated to define and explore th
e sharing economy?\nHow can the antecedents of the sharing economy be syst
ematically identified using a multidisciplinary approach?\nWhat organisati
onal forms and business models dominate the sharing economy? How novel are
they?\nWhat typologies can be developed to distinguish between different o
rganisational models in the sharing economy?\nHow innovative are sharing e
conomy businesses?\nHow sustainable are sharing economy businesses (econom
 ically\, financially\, socially\, environmentally)?\nWhat constrains and e
nables the growth and diffusion of sharing economy organisations?\nWhat is
the role of different institutional (cognitive\, regulative and normative)
\ncontexts for shaping the sharing economy?\nWhat are the implications of
the sharing economy for business\, labour and society?\nTo what extent is
the sharing economy reshaping the relationships between workers\, consumer
s and intermediaries?\nHow are elements of the sharing economy shaped by s
pecific spatial dynamics?\nWhat are the relationships between digital tech
nologies and the sharing economy?\nHow does the sharing economy affect the
competitive dynamics across sectors?\nWhat are the implications of the sha
ring economy for the provision of public services?\nHow can we measure the
 impact of the sharing economy?\n\n
